See this thread on ModMyMobile by Skrilax. There appears to be a working root for the Backflip based on the Droid 2 method by C-Skills.
It is kind of hit or miss at this point with it working for some and not others.

Is it possible we could be saying hello to the standard google search widget soon?
Has anyone tried this yet? I'm not knowledgable enough to attempt this while the guys on that thread are still hashing out the details. I'm gonna have to wait till it's a clearly spelled out process.
It works, I have a rooted BackflipRight now it's a bit of a rough process, but we're getting there. Awesome job to C skills & Skrilax_CZ
Wow! Major props to C-Skills, and thanks to Skrilax for posting and responding on that thread. It only took 6 months (haha), but somebody did it. That'll teach anyone to lose faith in the modding community.
I wish I had any sort of experience with that stuff, cuz I would love to try rooting my Backflip, but it's mostly gibberish to me.
Thank God. It finally happened! Doing this as soon as I get home.
Credit goes to ee0r.com for my avatar.
I'm gonna have to ask a stupid question since I don't have much linux experience, and this is my first android.
What exactly happens after you do this? Does it change the phone at all?
From what I understand it gives you access to do a whole lot more, but it doesn't change anything functionally in of itself, does it?
See..patience pays off. Bless those who figured out the gory unix details.
Mine's rooted... now what? I set up overclocking but idk what else can be done. Can it run a different rom?
I got it to work too, except, whenever I try to run su I get "permission denied" Curious... (of course I set the owner and permissions right...)
EDIT: looks like the special Superuser.apk I was using was the problem. Replaced it with the one linked here and it worked!
