In order to unlock the phone you would need to call ATT and get the unlock code for the phone.
Pretty sure even gaining root access (which isn't yet possible on a Backflilp) would still not allow you to remove the carrier lock on the phone.
I unlocked mine using a code I bought on ebay for $5. No need to ask ATT for the code(they won't give it to you anyway). You'll need the EMEI number, you'll enter it in the notes section and you'll get an email back in less than a day. Slip a non ATT sim in and it will prompt you for the code you just got by email and presto, it's now unlocked from the carrier.
Of course, it's still a crippled version of Android you're running but it's a start.
You can call ATT and they will unlock it for FREE. Why pay for something that the official carrier will give you.
You can unlock your Motorola blackflip at www.mobile-unlocker.com within 2 to 5 days.
Paying for an unlock code is only needed if you are not a current/former ATT customer. If you purchased the phone from ATT they should give you the unlock code for it, free. Like Tae mentioned, why pay for something you can get for free.
