I use a program called Handcent SMS which can be downloaded in the marketplace. Give you A LOT of option for all your texting needs as well as changing the alert for you texts.

Just open the messaging icon, then press menu, then messaging settings. From here you can choose separate ringtones for text, email and social notifications.

    Thanks for the quick replies!
I tried that, email is greyed out and I cant select it. I switched the text ringtone from that menu , so lets see what happens.

You can either use an application called ringdroid or move all your ringtones on your media card into the media folder.

You can change your notification ringtone, which assuming you have notifications on for text messages, then that will do the job.
