Spurious "Button Pushes"

My Samsung Captivate has started getting spurious "button pushes" where, while doing nothing, the tactile "buzz" happens and it acts like a button push has happened, often like a "search" or audio search has been selected. Any ideas what's causing it or more importantly, how to fix it?

I get the same thing on my Samsung Fascinate, occasionally.
Spurious button pushes producing buzzing and (usually) menu popup.
For a while I thought it was software but I looked at it harder recently and saw it persisting through a reboot, so now I think it's the button hardware.
Fortunately it comes and goes (mostly goes) so I haven't tried to get it serviced.

My problem started out as occasional and not too inconvienient, but progressed to the point where the phone became unusable. I hard-reset the phone, losing all my data, but it didn't help. I ended up returning the phone for another one. Now this one has started with the spurious button presses.. not too bad yet, but it's got me worried.
