- CM7 - Gingerbread for Captivate 2.3.x

With the total bricking of one of my Captivate's, I've decided that until the risk of bricking is MUCH lower, I'll be using CM7 as base instead of Samsung's JVB. I know you guys have waited a long time for Gingerbread, and almost as long for Froyo, so take your time flashing this and you should be successful. If not, then don't worry because you can just reflash stock and try again (or not, whichever you prefer). Another thing... this is Android in the way it was intended to be, so there's absolutely no Samsung related software, like the camera interface or the music player. Both of those things work just fine in CM7, you'll just notice that they have different UI's and different ways of doing things.

Credit where credit is due. This was developed and is mostly maintained and updated by these guys at the CM Forums. They have put a ton of effort into this and deserve an equal amount of thanks.

For those of you that have installed CM7 and gotten everything running, and would like to have it be a bit closer to my other ROM releases... try this .zip. It replaces ADW Launcher with Launcher2 (my usual default), replaces the stock fonts with the ones I use, and some other stuff.

Instructions on how to flash CM7:

Items to download:

• Link to download latest nightly... http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=captivatemtd
• GApps 6/13/11

Place these items on your -INTERNAL SD-:

• The Nightly .zip you downloaded from the link above.

Installation:

• You want to be on a ROM with a Clockwork enabled kernel, like any of mine, or the SpeedMod, Onyx, Suckerpunch, or any of the other Captivate kernels that are compatible with ClockworkMod recovery.
• You want to have at least 90% battery or more. It's best to be fully charged. If you flash without either of those satisfied, your battery stats will be messed up and you'll have to go through battery calibration on CM7.
• You need to be on Eclair or Froyo bootloaders (KF1 bootloaders don't work), so if you need to flash back to stock with this before starting: ODIN 3 One Click UCJF6
• Remove SIM and External SD cards.
• Boot into recovery by pressing and holding Volume Down + Volume Up + Power.
• Flash the .zip file that you placed on your internal SD.
• Now you should be to your homescreen.
• Flash GApps zip package AFTER REBOOTING for the Market and other GApps.

Enjoy Stock Gingerbread!

Some things you can do that might make CM7 a bit better are to flash one of the kernel's above, try the DSP Settings app, and try flashing a different modem. I'm using the UGJK4 modem, and it seems to be the best I've tried so far, but that's different for everyone because modems have different results in different locations.

Do you recommend wiping your internal SD first? I didn't do this last time I flashed CM7, and I had all kinds of problems (and yes, I followed the steps - 3 times).

I've never wiped my internal SD, and I've never had any issues from it... though it could help. I can't say that it won't help, but it's not necessary IMO.

Mount your Internal SD to your computer and delete anything that's not your personal info, like app folders or preference folders. Make sure to not delete your pictures!

You do to use ADB. You can get them from the Android SDK. I'll see if I can get a zip with the drivers needed posted up as well.

I'll have to try that, as I'm stuck with the fracking e:no misc partition boot loop bullsh*( again. I'll update if that helps after I mount, wipe it and start over. I already backed up my Titanium Backup to my hard drive, so I'm not starting completely from scratch at the end of this journey. Ugh.

Well - when you do the process on the screen 11 times and it still doesn't work - you've got to be giving yourself better odds to have gotten it "right" at least once. LOL. Either way, after going back to stock and trying all over again (and having wiped my internal SD card as well), still no dice - so I'm running a version of JVB. It's flawless thus far - but we'll see what a full day holds...

Same here. Tried for hours. "E: No Misc Partition"..... Flashed back to stock + master cleared too many times to keep count of. Tried starting with Firefly, XWJS8, and stock as soon as cwm was applied. No dice. I remember installing cm7 being hell before, but it only took me two tries the first time I (the first weekend it was out).

So a couple questions as I am overly fearfull of this "bricking" as I do not feel like paying for a new phone.. And I know alot of these are soft bricks and can be recovered I just want to avoid doing so as I like to plan out and REALLY read in and plan for doing things.. With that said.. You have listed 3rd party kernels that you like.. How does this really apply to doing this with cm7-captivate-initial-kernel??

The next question is you list out..

I am assuming if I am running yours I fullfill this..

Now use the 3-button recovery mode and boot into clockworkmod recovery. It will show a bit differently as you're now using the CM7 kernel.

This means hold down vol +/vol- and then hit power while the phone is off correct?

Now boot into clockworkmod again and flash the update-cm-7-04212011-NIGHTLY-Captivate-signed.zip package.

This means 3-button recovery mode?? Ie vol +/vol - and hit power while the phone is off?

Now open ODIN and put your Captivate in download mode.

Does this mean 3-button recovery mode again?

Now once I get all this done.. Then install the Google apps to make the phone functional.. What is missing from what your has? I currently enjoy a-lot of the functionality of your ROM, thus the reason I went with it..

Like the Facebook integration.. The video player that doesn't suck and can play xvid files.. And so on..

Where can I find a bug listing for this current one.. As I am fearful of also losing things like GPS and so on..
