Gingerbread Modem Testing Thread
Call it morbid curiosity to see if there is one Captivate Radio/Modem that will universally work well in all areas. Hopefully you folks will contribute to this. Please test at least 3 of the modems and post your results in dBm/asu form with the area you tested in. I'm sure test results will vary greatly throughout different regions of the country.
Downtown Chattanooga, TN (urban/metro)
jvo: -77dBm ~ 16asu
jp9: -95dBm ~ 7asu
jpg: -83dBm ~ 14asu
kb1: -79dBm ~ 15asu (still fubar)
jl2: -73dBm ~ 20asu
jl3: -87dBm ~ 13asu
jk3: -77dBm ~ 18asu
jk4: -79dBm ~ 16asu
jk9: -91dBm ~ 11asu (remove external SD before flashing this one)
Monteagle Mountain, TN (extremely BFE/Rural area)
jk4: -77dBm ~ 18asu
jl2: -111dBm ~ 1asu
jvo: -96dBm ~ 6asu
(above results are cm7)
(Edit: Open to all versions of Gingerbread now. Specially CM7 and Dorian's. Just post the rom version you're on with results)

Cool idea. Couple of questions - what significance does CM7 have in the testing? Would you expect the same results with different ROMs or bases (Froyo vs. GB)?
-
Having all test results be cm7 based would add a bit of control to the experiment. But I am open to taking them from any other rom. Just post the rom you're on with results.
They should be all extremely similar on any rom, froyo or gingerbread. But certain framework differences between roms & frameworks could possibly skew the results.

Ok guys, anyone here still on cm7 should know that the newer nightlies changed things around with the modems/radios. They always default to jl3 and if you have any older radio files on your phone - delete them as they will not work. The versions of the modems for newer nightlies are located here. (thanks to kaik541 for compiling those)

Two links for cm7 modems now.
Kaik541's Gooinside page ~ jk3, jk4, jl2, jl3, jq1, jve, jvk, kb1, kc1, kp1
and
Berryfx/stewart ~ jk4, jl2, jl3, jp5, jp9, jpe, jpg, jpm, jpx, jv3, jv4, jv5, jv6, jvk, jvo, kc1
Edit: Testing now... Getting very different results from the same radio/modem from the two links.

Captivate Radios
kc1: -77dBm ~ 18asu
jk3: -77dBm ~ 18asu
kp1: -77dBm ~ 18asu
jpg: baseband version unknown (flashed twice, downloaded twice, no dice)
Galaxy S Radios
jpg: -77dBm ~ 18asu
jpx: -73dBm ~ 20asu
jv4: -75dBm ~ 19asu
jpe: -73dBm ~ 20asu
All of the above were tested in the same spot as the OP running CM7 nightly #43. Have yet to take down signal readings in rural areas. My daily driver has been kc1 and works pretty well (like jk4) in rural areas. Will be testing jv5 out tomorrow.
Edit: Edited OP to encourage anyone running cm7 or Dorian's Gingerbread Beta to test out some radios, I believe the cwm3 modems on The Modem Thread @ xda will work fine on any 2.3x rom (except cm7).

Hi Johnnie5000,
It was a great idea to create this thread.
Do you have a clear favorite modem yet?
Have you upgraded to the newest nightly build of CM7?
I'm currently on CM7 (Nightly Build #57).
I'd be happy to try a few modems and give feedback, but I'm kind of a noob when it comes to this stuff.
Could you explain how to flash a new the modem?
I assume I'd just have to download the zip file to my phone's root, then boot into clockwork mod and install zip from SD card (obviously choosing the new modem zip file).

Not really, I keep going back and forth between jk4, kc1 & jvq.

Your method would work.
The way I do it is I download all of the modems to a folder (mines just called cm7) on the internal sd card of my cappy.
Long power button press -> Reboot -> Reboot into Recovery.
In recovery its the same as flashing anything else. Install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard -> find the modem and flash it

Good link for pretty much all of the gingerbread modems out now.
